As a child he was brutally starved and beaten by his alcoholic mother. His mother Catherine treated him awful. She did not think of him as one of her sons but as an it , to her that was his name. This book was one like no other, it is the first in the series of three. I was really hooked on this book and I didnt want to put it down. The theme portrayed through out this novel is the ability to overcome remarkable odds. He also started the Greenhouse project, which gave the poor health benefits. He gained happiness from these types of things. The Greenhouse project is mainly a selfless-good deed that helps others with their health problems. The act of assisting people will provide Morrie with personal fulfillment and in turn, bring about true happiness. Through all of this, I feel the most important part about Morries life was the fact that he found contentment in his life while being on the verge of death. I concentrate on all the good things still in my life. On people who are coming to see me. This quote shows how one must learn to love themselves. People have to sometimes be satisfied with their lives, no matter how bad it may seem. In Morries case, he is facing the ultimate distress, which is death. However, instead of wasting away his final weeks, he makes it a celebration. After learning how love is the center of Morries life, I will contrast this idea by explaining how Dave Pelzer was left without any love whatsoever. In A child called it, we see what life is like if love is not present within our lives. Dave was forced to live a traumatic childhood, divested of any form of love, and replaced with violence and hate. Daves situation was a horrible life to deal with in the sense that he had no one for moral or emotional support. He says, I had no one to talk to or play with. I felt all alone. He could not count on any family members or peers to get him through this ordeal. His isolation from society was a big part of the problem that added to his sadness. In one instance, Dave came home and tried to show his mom the good grade he got on a paper. Rather than experiencing any form of love from his mom, he instead was verbally abused. This shows how Dave is desperately eager for love and compassion from his mother. But no matter what he does, he will never attain any adoration from her. Another degrading incident in the book was when Dave was stabbed by his mother. He tried to go to his father for support and love, but only got the cold shoulder. I interpret this case as a form of neglect. Although being neglected does not involve any physical damage, some people feel that neglect is far worse than any other type of abuse. It forces a child into isolation, when he or she needs special attention at an early age. It damages a child more than one would expect. Also, at one point in Daves rough life, he was given some love and attention he had been wanting from his mother. For a few fleeting moments, my pain, my hunger, and my miserable way of life disappeared. I felt so warm, so alive. Although this was an evil facade that Daves mother was showing, we see the true power of love. The fact that Dave was tormented, beaten, and unloved for so many years gives me the impression that he will never forgive. But for one moment, Dave was experiencing love from his family. This love was so strong, that it made him actually forgive and forget about the numerous drawbacks that he went through earlier in his life. Now that one is able to see what it is like without true happiness in life, I will switch gears and speak about the love that Mitch Albom is lacking. I would wake up in the morning, brush my teeth, and sit down at the typewriter in the same clothes that I had slept in. This is a general routine for Mitchs lifestyle and the work he needed to accomplish. His hectic work-life generates a lot of money, but as Morrie says, people embrace material things and expect a sort of hug back. I feel that since love is such a strong thing to take in and give out, people dont want to show any form of love. Thus, they shower themselves with fancy material objects that are replacing true love. Mitchs relationship with Morrie taught him this concept. Among others, it also brought about a fatherly figure for Mitch, and taught him great life lessons that will help him live a more serene lifestyle. Mitchs first encounter with his changing ways was brought about through the physical affection he showed towards Morrie. I leaned over to give him a hug. And then, although it is not really like me, I kissed him on the cheek. These emotions that he shared with Morrie is the first steps in which his life becomes more meaningful and consumed with love. Ironically, Mitchs new life takes a greater course at the end of the book, when he sheds his first tear. Once he allows himself to express love to others, he can finally live a life of true happiness. As you can see, both books shared a common thematic reference that is an important life lesson. The way we observe how Morrie gains happiness in life at his ill old age is inspiring. The way we understand how love can sometimes be deprived from us, like in Dave Pelzers case, is enlightening. And the manner in which we learn how to change our lifestyles to find happiness like Mitch has done, is all but surreal. Our society is filled with many barriers, but the key is to find our path in life and keep moving to hold on to the love and companionship from our friends, family, as well as ourselves.

Effects of Alzheimers On Response Times John C. Hemby Physiological Psychology Dr. Colleen Miron There are many advances in science that has allowed us to understand, cope and in some cases treat certain diseases of the brain. However, there is much we still do not know about many of them. Alzheimer’s would be one of these disorders. The text states that Alzheimer’s is defined as a persistent, degenerating disorder that inhibits the brain’s cells or neurons and thus resulting in memory loss, language skills and rapid changes in behavior (Kalat, 2012). This usually occurs in the older aged population, around the age of sixty-five and isn’t considered to be a normal part of the aging process. According to an Alzheimer’s organization website, a person is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s every sixty-seven seconds and that there are currently more than 5 million Americans that have this disease (Help End Alzheimer’s, n.d.). One of the issues of having this disease deals with enumeration or recollection of numbers by counting. The text states that individuals with Alzheimer’s cannot recall learning certain skills i.e. golfing and are often surprised when they do well (Kalat, 2012). This research in this article is important because it shows how well a person with Alzheimer’s can quickly recall how many numbers are in a certain area just by looking at it. This is a simple experiment in that it will be easy to measure the reaction times and the task of counting isn’t that complex in comparison to golfing. According to the article, individuals that have Alzheimer’s sometimes have difficulty with visual enumeration. This means that a person with Alzheimer’s has difficulty counting visual numbers or tracking down a number in a specific area, i.e. looking for number 42 in a numerical list of 1-100. This study is unique in that finding the reaction time difference between olde r adults that have Alzheimer’s and those that don’t would be a quantifiable aspect and gives more proof to the damage that the brain receives from this disease. The researchers in this article are doctors Maylor, Watson and Muller and they studied the subject of visual enumeration in patients with Alzheimer’s in the year 2005. The hypothesis of the study was that the participants’ with Alzheimer’s would have a significant increase in response time in counting numbers, subitizing numbers(readily knowing a number just by looking at the amount of figures in a picture) and finding numbers in comparison to older adults that did not have Alzheimer’s (Maylor, Watson, and Muller, 2005). The study was conducted using participants from a resident home that specialized in the care of people with dementia. These participants were already diagnosed with dementia by professional health providers (Maylor, Watson, and Muller, 2005). There were a total of 12 participants whom had Alzheimer’s and their average age was 81 years old with 4 men and 8 women in the study. The other participants had an average age of 79 and only 8 participants; with only 3 being men and 5 were women. The researchers also gave the participants a Mini-Mental State Examination or MMSE, and the control group scored higher than the Alzheimer’s participants; 17.3 was the average for the Alzheimer’s participants and 29.4 was the average for the control group (Maylor, Watson, and Muller, 2005). Last, all of the participants were voluntary and did not receive any payments for their participation. The researchers used a laptop to be used as a visual for the participants. The laptop also measured response times (RT) and synched the displays. The participants utilized the spacebar key on the laptop as the response button. They put the screen at eye level with a distance of 60 cm. Then a researcher put in the responses with their own keypad. The stimuli on the screen were red circles displayed on a black background. They randomly generated the stimuli in order to avoid any counting ahead (Maylor, Watson, and Muller, 2005). The experimenter conducted the tests individually in a room that was either at the resident facility or at the home of the control group participant and the room had nothing but the laptop and the two people conducting the experiment. The initial test was the MMSE and then an enumeration task, a block of demonstration on the task, 3 turns of practice trials and last, there were 3 turns of experimental trials (Maylor, Watson, and Muller, 2005). The participants were required to press the spacebar for how many circles they saw. The results of the study indicated that the Alzheimer’s participants were slower than the control group, 1.4 seconds to be exact. The data was analyzed by using ANOVA’s to demonstrate the difference in response time and the accuracy of the numbers between the two groups. However, they had the same accuracy in seeing how many items were currently present on the monitor (Maylor, Watson, and Muller, 2005). There were some differences in the results with the numbering portion of the experiment. The participants with Alzheimer’s had a significant reduction in response time in comparison to the control group in the subitization part. The second part, counting, the Alzheimer’s participants were significantly slower than their counterparts as well. The hypothesis was supported by the results of the experiment (Maylor, Watson, and Muller, 2005). The conclusion of this study shows a definitive, qualitative answer between Alzheimer’s and normal older adults’ response time. This in turn shows where to start on how to improve those with Alzheimer’s response time especially since there isn’t any issue with their accuracy (Maylor, Watson, and Muller, 2005). There were several issues with this study. First, instead of using a cross sectional study, the researchers should have utilized a longitudinal study; that way they could see how slower the participants got overtime as their Alzheimer’s progressed. The second issue is that they should have acquired individuals that had just become diagnosed with early stages of Alzheimer’s; in the study they give no indication on what stage these participants were at. Last, there was an issue with the amount of participants in the study. The average was too generalized and needed a larger group to narrow down the averages (mean) in order to acquire a hi gher quality of data. There are some different avenues of approach for future studies on this particular subject. The first approach could be that men and women may suffer from Alzheimer’s differently, therefore in the future the men and women should be separated into different groups. This would show if there were any differences between the sexes. The next idea is that according to the text, those that drink coffee are less likely to have Alzheimer’s (Kalat, 2012). So for a future research idea, one should have the participants drink coffee for a while before starting the experiment. This could show if the effects of Alzheimer’s are mitigated when given a stimulant, i.e. caffeine. The last idea would have to be instead of utilizing numbers, use matching words. For example, gauge a participant’s reaction time by having a word on the screen and then the participant has to choose a synonym for that word i.e. happy equals jovial. Introduction to Purchasing-Power Parity The idea that identical items in different countries should have the same real prices is very intuitively appealing- after all, it stands to reason that a consumer should be able to sell an item in one country, exchange the money received for the item for currency of a different country, and then buy the same item back in the other country (and not have any money left over), if for no other reason than this scenario simply puts the consumer back exactly where she started. This concept, known as purchasing-power parity (and sometimes referred to as PPP), is simply the theory that the amount of purchasing power that a consumer has doesnt depend on what currency she is making purchases with. Purchasing-power parity doesnt mean that nominal exchange rates are equal to 1, or even that nominal exchange rates are constant. A quick look at an online finance site shows, for example, that a US dollar can buy about 80 Japanese yen (at the time of writing), and this can vary pretty widely over time. Instead, the theory of purchasing-power parity implies that there is an interaction between nominal prices and nominal exchange rates so that, for example, items in the US that sell for one dollar would sell for 80 yen in Japan today, and this ratio would change in tandem with the nominal exchange rate. In other words, purchasing-power parity states that the real exchange rate is always equal to 1, i.e. that one item purchased domestically can be exchanged for one foreign item. Despite its intuitive appeal, purchasing-power parity doesnt generally hold in practice. This is because purchasing-power parity relies on the presence of arbitrage opportunities- opportunities to risklessly and costlessly buy items at a low price in one place and sell them at a higher price in another- to bring prices together in different countries. (Prices would converge because the buying activity would push prices in one country up and the selling activity would push prices in the other country down.) In reality, there are various transaction costs and barriers to trade that limit the ability to make prices converge via market forces. For example, its unclear how one would exploit arbitrage opportunities for services across different geographies, since its often difficult, if not impossible, to transport services costlessly from one place to another. Nevertheless, purchasing-power parity is an important concept to consider as a baseline theoretical scenario, and, even though purchasing-power parity might not hold perfectly in practice, the intuition behind it does, in fact, place practical limits on how much real prices can diverge across countries. Let's look at each of the five factor model according to my personality and then match my take on these with the results of the test. OPENNESS: Openness to experience relates to one's flexibility to new ideas and openness to change. It signifies that the person welcomes and accepts new ideas, experiences, people, thoughts and situations. People who are 'open to experience' usually appreciate arts, science, music, emotions, and adventure. They tend to be very imaginative, creative, and like to have a variety of different experiences. They are less conservative and stick more to traditional ways. They are usually suspicious about newer ideas and are not comfortable with abstract thoughts and ideas. I think I am slightly more 'open to experience' than general people. I love creativity and new experiences. Throughout my school life, I have been involved in various different experiences. I have participated in debates, I have studied psychology and have taken huge interest in studying business as well, I have been in sports and I am also into reading. This all combines to make me a person with diverse set of experiences. I am thrilled by newer ideas. Whenever I take up a project, I look for creative and out-of-the-box ideas.
